What is Tencel?
Tencel™ is the brand name for Lyocell fibres manufactured by Lenzing. They are made from cellulose obtained from wood, most commonly eucalyptus, beech, or spruce sourced from responsibly managed forests.
Although the raw material is wood, the final product is not a natural fibre like cotton. The cellulose is dissolved during production and then regenerated into fine textile fibres. Lyocell therefore belongs to the family of regenerated cellulose fibres, alongside viscose and modal.
How is Tencel made?
Lyocell is produced using one of the most environmentally responsible manufacturing processes for cellulose fibres.
- Pure cellulose is extracted from wood.
- The cellulose is dissolved in a special organic solvent.
- The solution is pushed through fine spinnerets to create fibres.
- The fibres are washed, dried, and spun into yarn.
A key advantage is the so-called closed-loop manufacturing process. Most of the solvent is recovered, purified, and reused, helping to minimise waste.

Tencel is exceptionally smooth and pleasant to the touch, making it comfortable for products that come into direct contact with the skin.
Excellent moisture management
Lyocell absorbs moisture efficiently and distributes it throughout the fabric, allowing it to evaporate more easily. This helps the material feel comfortable, especially during warmer nights.
Strength
Unlike some other regenerated cellulose fibres, Lyocell maintains good strength even when wet, making it suitable for products that require frequent washing.
Easy to maintain
Its smooth surface tends to trap fewer small particles than fabrics with a textured pile, making everyday maintenance easier.

We have two dogs that sleep in our bed, and thanks to them we discovered one of Tencel's most practical advantages.
The smooth surface doesn't hold onto pet hair, dust, or small debris as much as traditional terry fabric. In most cases, the hair can simply be shaken off or brushed away by hand.
Many of our customers with dogs or cats tell us the same thing. They appreciate not only the protection the waterproof layer provides for their mattress but also the easier everyday maintenance.
That doesn't mean Tencel is better than terry cloth. Both materials have their advantages. Some people prefer the familiar soft texture of terry, while others enjoy the smooth feel and easy care of Tencel.
