Sleeping Bags – How to Choose the Right Size for Your Child

How to Choose the Right Sleeping Bag Size

Choosing the right sleeping bag size is important for your child’s comfort and freedom of movement during sleep. A sleeping bag that is too small may feel tight, while an unnecessarily large sleeping bag may not fit the child properly.

Different sleeping bag styles have different sizing. A footed sleeping bag is therefore chosen differently from a classic sleeping bag or a 3D sleeping bag with extra room for the feet.

If you would like to check the size more accurately, measure your child from the feet to the shoulders. This measurement corresponds most closely to the required sleeping bag length because the child’s head remains outside the sleeping bag. For this reason, it is usually not suitable to choose a sleeping bag that is as long as the child’s full body height.

For footed sleeping bags, we recommend choosing the size more precisely and avoiding too much extra length. The cuffs are not included in the stated sleeping bag length and add approximately 10–14 cm of extra space. If your child is between two sizes, we usually recommend the smaller size.

With classic sleeping bags, a little more room is perfectly fine. The lower part of a classic sleeping bag is flat, so some extra length is needed to provide enough space for the child’s feet.

3D sleeping bags are shaped differently. The lower part is wider and provides additional space for the feet, so their sizing differs from classic sleeping bags.

Sleeping Bag Size Guide

The tables below provide an approximate recommendation according to the child’s total height. Age is only approximate – children of the same age can differ considerably in height.

Footed Sleeping Bags

Sleeping Bag Size Child's Height Approx. Age
60 cm 68–80 cm 9–18 months
70 cm 80–92 cm 18–24 months
80 cm 92–110 cm 2–3 years
90 cm 110–116 cm 3–4 years
100 cm 116–128 cm 5–6 years
110 cm 128–134 cm 7–8 years

Important: the cuffs are not included in the stated length of a footed sleeping bag. They add approximately 10–14 cm and can also be pulled over the feet like integrated socks. For this reason, there is no need to choose an unnecessarily large size.

Classic Sleeping Bags

Sleeping Bag Size Child's Height Approx. Age
60 cm 60–70 cm 0–12 months
70 cm 70–80 cm 12–18 months
80 cm 80–90 cm 18–24 months
90 cm 90–100 cm 2–3 years
100 cm 100–110 cm 3–4 years
110 cm 110–120 cm 4–5 years

Classic sleeping bags can have a little more extra room. Their flat lower section means that part of the length is used by the child's feet. The recommended ranges are therefore designed to work well with both lightweight and insulated sleeping bags.

3D Sleeping Bags

Sleeping Bag Size Child's Height
70 cm 71–81 cm
80 cm 82–93 cm
90 cm 94–105 cm
100 cm 106–117 cm
110 cm 118–129 cm

The lower part of our 3D sleeping bags is specially shaped to provide extra room for the child's feet. This means the feet do not take up the sleeping bag length in the same way as with a classic flat sleeping bag.

What If Your Child Is Between Two Sizes?

For a footed sleeping bag, we generally recommend the smaller size if the child is between two sizes. An excessively large footed sleeping bag may make walking less comfortable.

For a classic or 3D sleeping bag, a little extra room is not a problem and the larger size may be suitable when the child is close to the next size.
