How to Properly Wash Mattress Protectors with a Polyurethane Layer

A mattress protector is a small but very useful household item. With a polyurethane (PU) layer, it is waterproof, yet breathable and silent (no rustling). To make it last as long as possible, simply follow a few easy washing and drying rules.

Main Benefits of PU Mattress Protectors

  • Waterproof – reliably protects the mattress from liquids and dirt.
  • Breathable – unlike “plastic covers”, PU allows airflow and prevents sweating.
  • Silent – flexible, soft material that does not rustle while sleeping.
  • Easy maintenance – machine washable according to the care label.

How to Wash Correctly

  • Always follow the care label. Some protectors tolerate up to 90 °C, others only up to 60 °C.
  • Use mild detergents without bleach or fabric softener.
  • Tumble drying is not recommended – if you use a dryer, only at the lowest heat setting. Ideally, air dry.
  • Do not iron or dry clean.

What Can Damage Polyurethane

Even durable PU has its limits. The following substances and practices can weaken the membrane and cause cracking or peeling, especially with repeated use:

1) Acids (including vinegar)

Citric acid and vinegar are often used in laundry (for descaling or odor removal). With regular use, they damage PU structure and speed up aging. If you want to use them, then only for cleaning the washing machine without laundry.

2) Alkalis

Baking soda in higher amounts or frequent use increases pH, which can lead to loss of elasticity and gradual PU damage. A small amount occasionally is usually harmless, but not regularly.

3) Alcohol and solvents

Alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol) and other solvents attack the PU surface and significantly shorten its lifespan.

4) Fabric softeners and bleaches

Softeners clog the breathable structure and reduce functionality. Bleaches (chlorine or oxygen-based) are too aggressive and can damage PU membranes.

5) Improper drying and high heat

Prolonged drying on high heat or ironing can irreversibly damage PU. In a dryer, use only minimal heat – better yet, air dry.

Alternative: PVC Protectors

Some of the above substances (acids, alkalis, alcohol) are better tolerated by PVC than by PU. However, PVC is not breathable and tends to rustle, which can cause sweating and discomfort during sleep. If this does not bother you, you might choose a PVC protectorbut we do not sell PVC protectors.

Conclusion

A PU mattress protector is waterproof, breathable and silent – ideal for comfortable sleep and longer mattress life. For maximum durability, wash gently according to the care label and avoid vinegar, citric acid, baking soda, alcohol, fabric softeners, bleach and high heat. This way, it will serve you reliably for many years.
